Truck vs. Bike

Hi, I got hit by a 30 tonne truck in December 2003. I was cycling and it turned into me, and I ended up under the wheel.

I broke my scapula (shoulder blade) in two places, my radius (forearm) and my index finger. There were serious abrasions on my hand, with damage to the radial collateral ligament at the proximal interphalangeal joint on the left index finger, a severed phalangeal artery, and lots of other weird stuff.

Here's a photograph of my hand with bits of wire sticking out after surgery and 13 stitches in my finger. This was taken about 12 days after the accident, when it was already starting to look a lot better.

Now my hand has a large red patch on it, and the wires are out and I can't bend my fingers properly. I also had a pin through my forearm, which will probably be in there for a while.

Nothing else worth photographing though. Hope these are good pictures. Oh, I'll add a photo of my bike, although its not clear from the photo how bent it is.

Editor's Notes:

Oh man, a 30-ton truck? Sheesh, that's not right. I know a guy at work who got hit by a car while cycling. Physically it took him a few months to be able to ride again, but I don't know how he got over it mentally. I assume it's always in the back of his mind.

You could consider yourself lucky, I suppose. A few months ago and just a couple of blocks from where I work a woman was run over and killed by a cement truck as it left a construction site. It was reported (at least around the water cooler) that the driver never even knew he hit her until he got back to his truck yard. On second thought, that may not make you feel lucky as much as it frighten you to ever get out there again.

And, shoulder blade broken? I really don't like the sound of that. I can't imagine the force that could break a shoulder blade in two places. That sounds being thrown against a wall Matrix style except without the cool shades and oh so sexy leatherwear.

Glad you are alive and if you have healing pictures send them in.
