Dam Skateboard

Here's the story behind this one:

I was skateboarding at one of my favourite spots, namely a dam for a reservoir...i soon became bored and thought it might be quite fun if i tried to skate down by the overflow of this reservoir. To simplify, this is a really long and steep tarmac path that runs alongside the overflow.

Being confident, i wasn't wearing pads of any sort (tut tut i know) and just before i got to halfway down this hill, something happened to my board and i began to fly forwards, i hit the tarmac on my chest, but rolled over onto my left hand side and my hand dragged along the tarmac as well as my hip.

Thankfully, i decided to wear two layers that day so the impact on my chest didn't actually do anything except rip my T-shirt. Later that day i went to A&E where they put iodine patches over the wounds which cleaned them up but stung a fair bit. The patches were followed by bandages. When the tasteful scabs formed i left it on display. The last two pictures are taken 3 months after the accident when i found out about this site, and the wounds all healed up naturally. I'm just waiting for them to stop being red :P.

the moral of the story...Wear ur pads!

Editor's Notes:

Re-reading this submission made me think of the interview I heard the other day with the director of Stoked: The Rise and Fall of Gator which is a documentary about Mark "Gator" Rogowski. I wasn't following skating at the time but from listening to the interview and then reading this article, I suspect the movie is pretty interesting. If you don't know, Gator Rogowski was one of the top vert skaters of the 1980's who went a little crazy and killed some girl. Okay, he went a lot crazy.

The interview made the whole thing sound outlandish and the article didn't help. The strangest part is that I've watched a fair amount of skating since 1991 when Gator was arrested and have never heard anyone talk about it. Even though when this all went down I was a self absorbed, non news junkie, non skateboarding 19 year old, I'm still kind of weirded out by the fact that I never heard of it.

Luckily our wound subject here will never strike anyone as crazy. Riding down a dam with no pads seems like a rational move to me. All right, you caught me, I'm just jealous that I was never even able to ollie. Never. I never figured it out. I had people try to teach me, I watched videos in slow motion, but nothing worked. What I've found is that I'm pretty good at holding stuff down. Yeah, I'm a rock.

Good documentation here, and nice touch sending a picture of the shirt in.
