These photos show what my ankle usually looks like and my ankle with a "very bad sprain".

How it happened: I was sitting at the computer when I saw a delivery guy walking up to my door. I jumped up too fast, not realizing my leg was asleep. I basically walked on my ankle, fell over and bent it back into position with my hands. It took me a while to get back up or fully realize what had happened. I never made it to answer the door.

Medical treatment - doc in a box - doctor on call with thick Indian accent. Not much help. He took off my sock, looked at my foot and said, "Oh my God!"

X-rays showed no break, but it swelled up this big because I didn't know that I should wrap it. He might have told me, but I really couldn't understand him at all. It was like a bad skit, only with no hidden camera. I did ice/heat the first two hours, but didn't actually wrap it until 4-5 days later. Now it is almost back to normal. I also had crutches for the first 10 days. Now it's about three weeks later and I still wear an ankle brace and Velcro shoe and take two Naproxen a day for the pain.

This was the most grotesque photo, it turned lots of different colors, but they didn't show up well on camera.

Editor's Notes:

I've been running this site for over a year now and I'd like to say that this is the first computer related wound we've had, but unfortunately, it isn't. We had "prickly heat" from holding a mouse too long and a fan vs. finger incident that didn't turn out too well. I believe, however, that this is the first delivery guy related wound. I always suspected we'd have pizza delivery guys shot or knifed somewhere along the way, but we haven't had any of those yet.

I knew a guy in college who was delivering pizza for a while. One night as I was leaving the dorms, I saw him on the steps outside. He seemed very shaken and told me some guy had just pulled a gun on him and ripped him off, right on those very steps about 20 minutes prior. For some reason, I was not impressed.

I remember thinking, Even if someone did pull a gun on you right here, there's no way they'd shoot you on these busy steps, that would be stupid. I think what I said was, "Dude, that sucks...you okay?" Then I went on my way to the grocery store or where ever I was going at 10 P.M. on a weeknight. So for some reason, I didn't doubt that someone was stupid enough to pull a gun and rob the pizza guy, but thought that they would obviously be smart enough not to use it. That's 18-year-old logic for you.

Living in that same dorm building, I had a friend who sprained his ankle so badly that he had to be in a wheelchair for a few weeks. He was playing basketball and came down on the side of his foot from a regular old jump shot. That was the biggest, most discolored ankle I have ever seen, and I've seen a couple since then. His whole foot was black. It took a looong time to heal.

Sounds like yours is healing up okay, which is good to hear, and see.
