user: princessinapinkdress date: 09/21/2003 05:02:23 message: I wish to comment on the impetigo article. It was said that impetigo is not a serious issue. Well I'm afraid to inform you that it is a killer. If not treated promptly, it causes massive septicaemia, which causes fatal kidney failure. Prompt treatment is required. I know personally of an 18 month old child who succumbed to this so called harmless disease.
user: sharky date: 09/21/2003 08:42:50 message: Sorry to hear that princess. I was reading articles that say things like this: Prognosis for a child with impetigo is excellent. The vast majority of children recover quickly, completely, and uneventfully.
But found this after your comment: Impetigo is usually an uncomplicated skin condition. Left untreated, however, it may develop into a serious disease, including osteomyelitis (bone infection), septic arthritis (joint infection), or pneumonia. If large quantities of bacteria are present and begin circulating in the bloodstream, the child is in danger of developing an overwhelming systemic infection known as sepsis.
So you're right, it should be considered dangerous and be treated immediately.
Thanks for the comment.

user: jkatian date: 06/26/2005 23:08:42 message: My 5 yr old daughter suddenly got impetego on her face. Within a day she had a large spot on her cheek where the skin had been eaten away. We rushed to the doctor who told us it was extremely serious and often didn't respond to antibiotics. I cleaned her carefully three times a day and she had topical and internal medicine. Luckily it cleared up without a scar. I wasn't as lucky. It spread to me quickly and I ended up with a small brown spot where it attacked. Very contagious.

I have been diagnosed with impetigo (not as bad as this young lad) but as soon as I heal I'll post my photos.
