Chatterbox- Shredded Fingers

Back to this wound

message: There was some interest from the editor about the length of time it took the poor English chap in "Shredded Fingers" to get medical attention that was worth anything. I noticed the the Australian guy in "Sliced Leg" had the same problem and I wonder if the explanation is in what the modern world refers to as the miracle of socialized medicine. I've heard many stories about Canadians hopping over the 49th parallel into the United States to receive faster and better health care. Anyone in the field who can verify the validity of such a hypothesis?

message: Well,no one is going to go to the trouble of a border crossing nowadays for a few stitches.
Things like new drugs that have not been approved here yet, desperate sick people wii seek treatment in the U.S.
Anyways, there are alot of gore sites out there, some very graphic stuff, but it's the hand injuries that turn my stomach.Maybe the work I do,knowing that could just as well be me.

message: I am not a doctor of a socialized country. I am however a second year medical student at a Virginia Medical College. I have extensivly researched the healthcare system in socialized countries and have had several lectures in medical school on universal healthcare.
In contries with socialized healthcare there is often a waiting line (several months) for what are considered elective surguries (ie. hip replacement. Such specialist as hand surgeons are only found in the large cities. The small town hospitals only have generalist and general surgeons and even then the line of several hours to get into a "free" hospital. There are however private hospitals if you wish to pay out of pocket for there services or if you have good private insurance. In these hospitals you get service immediatly much as in US hospitals.

message: Well, I'm just your regular redneck who likes knives. I just want to share with ya what happened.

I was sharpening an old bowie knife with a file you see. Somehow or another, the file slipped up, the blade went blazing around, and the next thing you know, I'm here, the knife is to the left of me, and a large chunk of my index finger is sliding down my wall. Large as in, right off the side of it, bout an inch and a half long, 2 centimeters wide, and at least one cm deep.

Suprisingly, thats not what hurt. What hurt was the bill. I sat in the waiting room of the hospital holding a bloody towel for 2 and a half hours, in a cubicle for another 2, had my finger wrapped up and given a shot for pain, then sent on my way. The bill was 444 dollars even. Nice huh? Damn doctors.

message: Actually, now that I have had a bit of time to browse around the site, my finger looked just like the guys from the pumpkin carving incident. Even looks the same healed. *Just to let yall know.*
