message: My dad had this same thing happen to his finger - I was there - it was about 18 years ago. The doctors used the old finger pad to cover over the bone. His fingernail grew back too. He never griped about the pain, but he was probably being macho. Recently, he had the same thing happen (and he didn't take pictures - next time I will insist!), and instead of covering the wound with the finger pad (with the fingerprint and fingernail and all) the doctors just cut the whole thing off. They said it would heal faster that way, and wouldn't feel as weird. It happened memorial day, and he was fully recovered and not in any pain by the 4th of July. Let that be a lesson to you - if they can't sew it back on, don't save ANY of it.

Your finger looks great. Hope it's doing okay.

message: It looks good. I'm glad it healed well.

When I was 6 or 7 my father lost his thumb. My brother (two years older then me) was driving the go-cart into the back of the truck when the tailgate slipped and squished Dad's thumb off. I still remember how calm he was as he bent down to pick up his thumb and walk into the house to tell my Mother that we had to go to the ER. My brother was crying and saying, "I'm sorry, I won't do it again." Dad just laughed and said "I hope not, I only have one left." He was not in much pain because he had been drinking rum and coke most of the afternoon. He said the only time it really hurt was when they were cleaning off the end of his thumb with an evil looking wire like brush. They were not able to attach the finger because it was squished. He did grow back his fingernail but it looks a lot like a bird claw.
I'm glad I have managed to keep all my digits this far.
